ittle Wolferl loved music so much...

that he never wanted to stop playing the piano. Papa NEVER had to make him practice. In fact, Papa would have to force him to go out and play, and even then, he only wanted to play games that included music. Remember, music WAS a game to Mozart. It seemed that everything about music came as second nature.

When he was eight, he started to write for other instruments as well. He wrote a beautiful sonata for the flute AND the piano.

At that same age, he actually wrote a whole symphony. He had not only mastered the composition of a song, but now he could coordinate different instruments playing different parts. In his head, he could imagine the sound of one instrument joining in after another dropped out and still others playing harmony and adding rhythm. Then he could put it all on paper with separate pairs of lines for separate instruments all lined up so the various musicians could make beautiful music.

Actual symphony written by Mozart

  • Notice how #4 & #5 start out, then #7 takes over.
  • #1 & #2 accompany #7 and have many of the same notes.
  • #8 plays the whole time but with only a few notes.
  • What do you think #3 is doing, I hope he doesn't get paid by the note!

Can you guess which instrument each pair is written for?
